Source and translation notes

· Geʿez

Source edition: charles-1906-enoch

Selected edited-edition working text. Source review and these notes do not establish human-specialist, independent-manuscript or full-book certification.

Chapter and verse addresses follow the supplied selected-edition POB records. Each available verse is displayed once; artwork does not certify source completeness.

  • 38:1[a] The selected printed heading reads ምሳሌ፡ ቀዳማ፲፡, ending with the numeral-shaped glyph ፲ rather than an ordinary final ይ. This source record preserves that anomalous printing instead of silently normalizing it to ቀዳማይ. “First parable” renders the legible ordinal stem and the heading’s place after the announcement of three parables in37:5; whether the anomalous glyph is a printing error or reflects an antecedent cannot be established from these images.
  • 38:1[b] Literally, 'from the face of the dry land.' The opening temporal construction continues into verse 2.
  • 38:2[a] The unusual expression 'whose deeds hang upon the Lord of Spirits' is retained; 'whose deeds depend on the Lord of Spirits' is another possible construal. The selected main text reads righteousness, not a silently substituted personal title.
  • 38:3[a] Or 'the secrets of the righteous.' The text does not specify what those hidden things are.
  • 38:4[a] Charles 1906 printed page 77 notes 42 and 44 identify editorial emendations in this clause. The final descriptor 'righteous' is also flagged as possibly interpolated in note 45. This follows the selected edited text, not independently verified manuscript wording.
  • 38:5[a] The selected edition marks the perish verb and records differing readings in printed page 78 note 3. The wording follows that edition without claiming an independent manuscript adjudication.
  • 38:6[a] Charles places an opening interpolation bracket before 'because their life has come to an end'; it continues across the chapter boundary and closes in 39:2. This clause is retained transparently as bracketed material in the selected edition, not certified as original. The Ge'ez source intentionally preserves the open bracket at this verse boundary.

2and when righteousness appears on the faces of the righteous, the chosen whose deeds hang upon the Lord of Spirits, and light appears to the righteous and chosen who dwell on the dry land, where will sinners dwell, and where will those who denied the Lord of Spirits find rest? It would have been better for them not to have been born.
