Jonathan said, “Look, we are crossing over to the men, and we will show ourselves to them.”

If they say to us like this, ‘Stay there until we come to you,’ then we will stand where we are and will not go up to them.

But if they say this, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up, for Yahweh has given them into our hand, and this will be the sign for us.

When the two of them revealed themselves to the Philistine garrison, the Philistines said, “Look, the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they had hidden themselves.”

And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armor-bearer and said, “Come up to us, and we will tell you something.” Then Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Come up after me, for Yahweh has given them into the hand of Israel.”

Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer behind him. They fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer killed them after him.

That first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armor-bearer made, was about twenty men within about half a furrow in an acre of a field.
