Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian servant woman whose name was Hagar.

Then Sarai said to Abram, “Look now, Yahweh has kept me from bearing children. Please go in to my female servant; perhaps I will be built up through her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her female servant, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife.

He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

Then Sarai said to Abram, “The wrong done to me is on you. I gave my female servant into your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, I became contemptible in her eyes. May Yahweh judge between me and you.”

Then Abram said to Sarai, “Look, your female servant is in your hand; do to her what is good in your eyes.” Then Sarai afflicted her, and she fled from her presence.
