When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.

Isaac loved Esau because game was in his mouth, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Jacob was cooking a stew, and Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted.

Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me gulp down some of that red stuff, that red stuff there, because I am exhausted.” Therefore his name was called Edom.

Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright today.”

Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what use is this birthright to me?”

And Jacob said, “Swear to me today.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.

And Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went away. Thus Esau despised the birthright.
