Graphic Bible · Scene 2 of 4

The younger listener washing his hands at a simple household basin, pausing to look up with relief while the woman stands nearby; soft morning light, no priestly temple setting or magical cleansing.

Hebrews 9:11-14

A cleansed conscience

Story guide: The contrast concerns conscience and service to the living God. The washing is a visual analogy, not a claim that water performs the sacrifice described here.

11But the Messiah came as high priest of the good things that have come, through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands—that is, not of this creation—

12and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through his own blood, he entered once for all into the holy places, having obtained eternal redemption.

13For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the ashes of a heifer that sprinkle those who have been defiled, sanctify for the purification of the flesh,

14how much more will the blood of Messiah—who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God—cleanse our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
