If only my request would be granted, and God would give me what I hope for:

that God would be willing to crush me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off.

This would still be my comfort, and I would exult in unrelenting pain; for I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

What strength do I have, that I should keep hoping? And what is my end, that I should prolong my life?

Is my strength the strength of stones, or is my flesh bronze?

Is it not that I have no help within me, and has sound wisdom been driven from me?
