His older son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing,

And calling one of the servants, he asked what these things might be.

He said to him, “Your brother has come, and your father slaughtered the fattened calf, because he received him back safe and sound.”

But he became angry and was unwilling to go in. So his father came out and pleaded with him.

But he answered his father, ‘Look, for so many years I have been serving you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends.’

But when this son of yours came, the one who devoured your livelihood with prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.

And he said to him, ‘Child, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.’

But it was necessary to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.
