Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but you shall fulfill your oaths to the Lord.’

But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, because it is the throne of God;

nor by the earth, because it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King;

Nor shall you swear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.

But let your word be, ‘Yes, yes,’ or ‘No, no.’ Anything beyond these is from the evil one.

You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’

But I say to you, do not resist the evil person. Instead, if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well.

And to the one who wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak also.

And whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
