Doves and Gilead

A Locked Garden and Living Water · Song of Songs 4

Story guide: The beloved begins a sustained praise of the woman, comparing her eyes with doves and her hair with goats moving down a mountain. Notice the birds and descending flock beside her portrait. Their softness and flowing movement help translate the comparisons into visual impressions without changing her into the animals.

1Look, you are beautiful, my darling; look, you are beautiful. Your eyes are doves behind your veil. Your hair is like a flock of goats streaming down from Mount Gilead.
