And when they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them.

And immediately the whole crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and running up to him, greeted him.

And he asked them, “What are you discussing with one another?”

And one from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, having a mute spirit.”

And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. And I told your disciples to cast it out, but they were not able.

And answering them, he says, “O unbelieving generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I put up with you? Bring him to me.”

And they brought him to him. And when the spirit saw him, it immediately convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming.

And he asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood.”

And many times it has thrown him both into fire and into waters to destroy him. But if you can do anything, help us, having compassion on us.

But Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can’? All things are possible for the one who believes.”

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

But when Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”

And after crying out and convulsing him greatly, it came out; and he became like a dead man, so that many were saying, “He is dead.”

But Jesus, taking hold of his hand, raised him up, and he stood up.

And when he had entered the house, his disciples were asking him privately, “Why were we not able to cast it out?”

And he said to them, “This kind cannot come out by anything except prayer.”
